Meghan McCain Slams Trump Supporter Who Called For Her Father To Die

At least one of President Trump’s supporters went way too far Tuesday night in criticizing Sen. John McCain, according to the Arizona Republican’s daughter.

The Daily Mail reported that Meghan McCain was appalled when she saw a message from journalist David Catanese, who posted a picture of a man at the president’s rally in Phoenix. The reporter wrote: “This Trump supporter is shouting at protesters, ‘McCain needs to die now!’” The senator’s daughter tweeted: “I wouldn’t wish seeing this about your own father or my worst enemy. May God help these people who inflict such cruelty in the world.”

During his bombastic speech at the rally, Trump blasted the senator for voting against a GOP-sponsored bill that would have amended Obamacare. McCain and two other Republican senators joined all the Senate’s Democrats to defeat the measure, 51-49. “We were one vote away,” the president told the crowd. “Think of it — seven years; one vote away from repeal. One vote. Speak to your senator. Please, speak to your senator.”

McCain cast the vote shortly after doctors diagnosed him with brain cancer. He then left the nation’s capital to undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatments at the Mayo Clinic. The lawmaker said he opposed the legislation because it was merely “skinny repeal” that would not have significantly changed the Affordable Care Act. He expressed concern that millions of Americans were at risk of losing access to affordable health insurance. “While the amendment would have repealed some of Obamacare’s most burdensome regulations, it offered no replacement to actually reform our health-care system and deliver affordable, quality health care to our citizens,” the senator explained in a written statement.

The Daily Mail pointed out that Trump and McCain have frequently been at odds with each other. During the 2016 race for the White House, Trump declared that the senator was not a “war hero” despite having been a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for more than five years. McCain refused to endorse Trump even after the real-estate mogul won the Republican presidential nomination.

The two men clashed again last week, when the president defended “very fine people” who marched with white supremacists at the Aug. 12 rally in Charlottesville, Va. He said “many sides” were responsible for the violence at the event. A woman died and dozens of people were injured when a man described as a neo-Nazi allegedly slammed his sports car into a crowd of anti-racism counter-protesters. McCain challenged Trump to condemn those who promote hate. He tweeted: “There’s no moral equivalency between racists & Americans standing up to defy hate & bigotry. The president of the United States should say so.”

Since the cancer diagnosis, Meghan McCain has posted pictures of outings with her father. On Monday, they got together to view the solar eclipse. The senator shared a photo and tweeted: “Watching the #SolarEclipse17 with @meghanmccain on a hike in #Arizona!” Last weekend, the dad and daughter hiked with former Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.
