Media Loses It After Seeing What Trump Did During United Nations Toast

President Trump did something at a recent luncheon that raised eyebrows. Trump, who claims he has never consumed alcohol, appeared to drink wine during a luncheon at the United Nations on Tuesday.

After speaking to the UN General Assembly, the president gave a toast to “the potential – the great, great potential – of the United Nations.” He took two sips of some sort of red liquid, then handed the wine glass to an assistant. Trump seemed to drink again during a second toast, honoring UN Secretary General António Gutteres, later in the luncheon.

Trump is known for insisting that alcohol has never touched his lips. His brother Fred Jr. died of alcoholism when he was in his 40s, according to the Daily Mail. Reporters did not get an answer when they asked Hope Hicks, the recently named White House communications director, whether the president had violated his no-drinking oath.

The mystery became a popular subject on Twitter and news shows. Domenico Montanaro of National Public Radio asked: “Is that wine or Diet Coke for Trump?” On MSNBC, host Katy Tur remarked: “Trump famously doesn’t drink because of his brother, Fred. It looks like he just had a sip of wine. Has anyone else seen that before?” Others suggested that the substance in the president’s glass was grape juice, while Fox News’ Ellison Barber said it “seems to be wine.” Jennifer Jacobs of Bloomberg referred to a “maroon liquid.” Politico’s Annie Karni was more certain, proclaiming that the president gave “a toast with a glass of red wine in his hand; took a sip.”

Some Trump supporters expressed disgust with all the conjecture. One of them tweeted: “Any chance that wasn’t wine in POTUS glass? At church we have bread and grape juice, not bread and wine. They do look alike.”

Trump has said he considers drinking communion wine a proper exception to being a teetotaler. At the Family Leadership Summit in 2015, when pollster Frank Luntz inquired whether he had ever asked God for forgiveness, the presidential candidate admitted that he had not done so. He added: “When we go in church, and when I drink my little wine – which is about the only wine I drink – and have my little cracker, I guess that’s a form of asking for forgiveness.”

Trump opened Tuesday’s luncheon by acknowledging his skepticism about the UN. “For years I've been a critic, but I have also been somebody that said that the United Nations has tremendous potential,” he told his fellow world leaders. “I have to say that as someone born in New York and raised in New York it is a great honor to have the United Nations in New York and always has been. We are working very hard to solve world problems, but there is no better forum – there can be no better forum – and certainly there can be no better location where everybody comes together.”

The Daily Mail noted that in the past, Trump has accused the UN of “utter weakness and impotence,” and alleged that it is “not a friend of democracy.”
