McConnell Urges GOP to Reject Tea Party Candidates

For Republicans to increase their majorities in the House and Senate next year, the party must “nominate people who can win,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell declared Friday.

He warned that far-right candidates are doomed to lose their races to Democrats in the general election, The Hill reported. “What we did in 2014 was we didn’t have more Christine O’Donnell’s, Sharron Angles, Richard Mourdocks or Todd Akins,” McConnell said, referring to Tea Party favorites who went down to defeat in previous years.

In the 2014 midterm congressional elections, Republicans did better because “the people that were nominated were electable,” according to McConnell. “That will happen again in 2016,” he vowed. “We will not nominate anybody for the United States Senate on the Republican side who’s not appealing to a general-election audience.”

The Hill pointed out that O’Donnell was ridiculed for assuring voters in a campaign commercial that she was not a witch. Harry Reid, the top-ranking Democrat in the Senate, defeated Angle in 2010 despite his unpopularity with Nevada voters.

Mourdock, who beat Republican Sen. Richard Lugar in the 2012 primary but lost to Democrat Joe Donnelly, infamously said pregnancies resulting from rape are “something God intended.” Akin failed to defeat incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri that year after he talked about “legitimate rape.”
