McConnell Goes After Clinton

Hillary Clinton is not going to win next year’s presidential election simply because voters would like to see a woman in the White House, according to the top-ranking Republican in the Senate.

“I don’t think arguing ‘vote for me because I’m a woman’ is enough,” Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Monday during a speech in his home state of Kentucky. “You may recall my election last year. The gender card alone is not enough.”

In the 2014 midterm election, McConnell defeated Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes. The Associated Press noted that Grimes campaigned on gender-related issues like pay equity for women.

Many people “would love to have a woman president,” McConnell said. “The question is, a woman president to do what? And I think, inevitably, Hillary Clinton’s campaign will be four more years of the last eight.”

The AP reported that Clinton was quick to fire back at the GOP leader. She said he “really doesn’t get it” and added: “There is a gender card being played in this campaign. It’s played every time Republicans vote against giving women equal pay, deny families access to affordable child care or family leave, (and) refuse to let women make decisions about their health or have access to free contraception.”
