McConnell Comments On Gay Marriage

Unlike some of his fellow Republicans, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is reluctantly accepting the Supreme Court’s ruling last week that legalized same-sex unions nationwide.

He said Tuesday night that Congress has few options on the issue, Newsmax reported. However, he told WDRB TV that he continues to believe in traditional marriage.

"I’ve always felt that marriage is between one man and one woman, and the Supreme Court has held otherwise. That’s the law of the land," the Kentucky lawmaker said.

Asked whether there is anything Congress can do to reverse or weaken the ruling, McConnell replied: "I don’t think so. I think the courts have pretty well spoken." He advised Republicans to shift their focus to “the potential problems with regard to religious liberty."

McConnell explained that “there are number of institutions, which in practicing their religion, may run up against this." He warned that there will be “a lot of additional litigation, as this decision is weighed against the strongly held religious beliefs of a number of Americans." He pledged to find ways that “religious liberty (can) be enhanced by statute."

Newsmax noted that some Republicans, like presidential candidate Ted Cruz, are pushing for a constitutional amendment allowing states to decide who can get married.
