McCain Slams Trump’s Pledge To Reinstate Torture

Sen. John McCain vowed on Saturday to stop Donald Trump from making good on his campaign promise to resume using torture techniques on terrorism suspects, Politico reported.

“I don’t give a damn what the president of the United States wants to do. We will not waterboard,” the veteran Republican lawmaker from Arizona declared during his speech at the Halifax International Security Forum. He added: “We will not torture people. ...It doesn’t work.”

McCain pointed out that the Geneva Conventions outlawed waterboarding and other “enhanced interrogation” methods, and that Congress approved a similar ban last year. The law, which President Obama advocated and signed, limits interviewing techniques to activities that the U.S. Army Field Manual condones. Waterboarding is not one of the approved manners of attempting to extract information from prisoners.

That has not stopped Trump from claiming he can force the military to torture suspects. “We have to fight fire with fire,” the Republican nominee told his fans at a campaign rally in June. Trump promised to “fight so viciously and violently” to destroy ISIS if he won the election. He asked the audience, “What do you think about waterboarding?” When the question was greeted with cheers, the candidate remarked: “I like it a lot. I don’t think it’s tough enough.”

Politico noted that at a GOP presidential debate, Trump pledged to “bring back a hell of a lot worse than waterboarding.” McCain said anyone who tries to reinstate torture will face criminal charges “in a New York minute.”
