McCain Calls on Obama to Protect Christians in Foreign Lands

“Christianity is under attack (and) the United States must do more to promote religious freedom,” Sen. John McCain declared in an editorial for Fox News.

The Arizona Republican accused President Obama of failing to take adequate steps to provide protection for American Christians living and traveling in foreign countries, according to The Hill.

The Islamic State and other extremist groups are increasingly committing violence against U.S. citizens, McCain and co-author Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council wrote. Opposing Views noted that the council is a conservative Christian organization that lobbies Congress.

“The Obama administration has repeatedly refused to defend religious freedom abroad, and continues to ignore its devastating cost to those religious communities targeted by terrorists because of their religious beliefs,” the op-ed stated.

It continued: “While the world has been rightly outraged by the violence waged by (ISIS) against people of all sects, ethnicities and religions, the United States, Europe and other key allies have done little to end (the militant group’s) systematic efforts to drive out and eradicate entire religious communities from their historic and sacred homelands.”

McCain pointed out that ISIS is not the only threat. Radical groups like Boko Haram in Nigeria also are allegedly committing violence against those whose religions they oppose.
