Mayoral Candidate Stirs Outrage After Listing This As A Qualification

As long as there have been election campaigns, there have been questionable slogans to go along with them. That will not change anytime soon, but some of them really make you stop and think. For example, this one leads to the following question: Who in their right mind would think this was a good idea in today’s political climate? As the Huffington Post shares, our answer is Charlotte mayoral candidate Kimberley Paige Barnette.

In a since-deleted post on Facebook, Barnette thought it was a good idea to list out her qualifications for office in the following manner.

“REPUBLICAN & SMART, WHITE, TRADITIONAL,” the post read.

Unsurprisingly, a ton of backlash followed.

“You are NOT doing conservatives or Republicans any favors,” posted a commenter to the Charlotte Observer.

Robin Hayes, chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, was not pleased.

“This contest will not be decided based on the skin color [of] the candidates. Any suggestion that a candidate is more or less qualified for political office based on their skin color alone, is offensive to North Carolina Republicans and we condemn it,” a statement from Hayes read in part.

Barnette attempted to clarify her remarks, but she didn’t exactly knock it out of the park.

“I’m not prejudice. I do not judge other people. Other people judge me. What is the difference? I say I’m white. Others describe themselves as example transgenders. Are they labeling themselves?” she said. “I’m also a divorced mother of two adult children. I accept others as who they are. I have traditional conservative views when it comes to family and friendships.”

During a debate last month, she also offered up some comments that gave observers some pause.

“I don’t think we should encourage more lower-income people to [come to] Charlotte. We should attract higher-income people,” she said.

“I don’t believe that transgenders should be in bathrooms based on their, who they identify with, I never have. I believe that there could be a separate restroom, but however I do not believe that that should be allowed whatsoever,” she added. “As a magistrate, I issued processes on persons that were in the bathroom, males that were in the bathroom, and you never know what they are, and they scare children, quite frankly.”

It’s pretty safe to assume that Barnette will not be a crossover candidate that unites both parties as she runs for office. She’s certainly entitled to her views on income and transgender policies, but she should be able to voice them in a coherent fashion that doesn’t make her appear to be divisive. Barnette was attempting to do that in the debate, but let’s just say a little more polish and prep would’ve worked wonders.

As for her post on social media, that’s a big one to expect voters to suddenly forget. She’s making it appear that she should be elected due to her race, and nothing could be further from the truth. It’ll be pretty stunning if she recovers and makes it through to election day.
