Looks Like Jared Kushner Has Yet To Learn Valuable Lessons About Disclosure, Private Email

If you have crystal clear examples on what should and should not be done, it’s pretty tough to garner sympathy when you do something that falls in the latter category. To wit, have a chat with a current or former police officer and have them regale you with tales of the excuses that people drop when they’re caught red-handed doing something. They obviously know what they’re doing is wrong, otherwise there wouldn’t be all that much need for excuses.

Laws exist for a reason, and most fully functioning adults have a pretty clear grasp on the big ones. Nonetheless, people get busted for things all the time and attempt to plead ignorance. That excuse typically doesn’t hold all that much weight. This little example of laws and how things should work can also be applied to those that work in the nation’s capital.

There have been all kinds of high-profile scandals through the years that have brought down politicians and federal government employees, and it’s pretty challenging not to find examples of how not to behave. Unfortunately, there remain a ton of folks that refuse to take those simple lessons and commit them to memory. Based on some recent reports, we may have to include White House senior adviser Jared Kushner into that ignominious category.

As the Daily Mail shares, there are new reports making the rounds that point to the possibility that Kushner has an incredibly bad memory, or that he’s not a big fan of reading the instructions that accompany federal disclosure forms. Regardless of the reasons, it’s getting ridiculous. For the latest trick, it turns out that Kushner has another private email account that he failed to disclose to the Senate Intelligence Committee.

So why is this such a big deal? Because that just so happens to be the committee that is going over everything with a fine-toothed comb to get to the bottom of alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 federal election. Kushner has already failed to disclose one private email account to the committee - and then another pops up. This wasn’t just a personal account in which he was sharing recipes and cat videos either, as there are reports that internal White House documents were forwarded to it.

None of this is to suggest that Kushner was doing anything shady or underhanded here, but it does point to a serious amount of carelessness and lack of judgement. Having one personal email account come to the forefront in the wake of the lessons afforded by failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is bad enough. Having a second one emerge is nothing short of head scratching. It’s not too big of a leap to suggest that he’d be shown the door right about now in a White House that didn’t also house his father-in-law.

We’ll have to wait and see how this all plays out, but it’s a horrible look for Kushner no matter how you spin it. To have personal emails become a thing in the Trump White House after so much time was given to Clinton’s flippant views on email security is nothing short of mind-boggling.
