London Mayor Says Trump Is Just Like ISIS

President Trump “is not dissimilar” to ISIS in some ways, according to the mayor of London, England.

The Daily Mail reported that the municipal official, Sadiq Khan, accused Trump of playing the same “game” as the terrorist group by widening the divide between Western and Muslim-majority countries. Khan was reacting to Trump’s new travel ban, which would prevent visitors and immigrants from certain nations from entering the United States. During his presidential campaign, Trump called for the “total and complete shutdown” of Muslim immigration.

Khan, in a Sunday speech at a Labour Party event, offered to “educate” Trump about the Islamic faith. “Think about what you are saying, because what you are saying is not dissimilar to what Daesh or so-called IS says,” the mayor told the crowd, directing his remarks at the president. “They say that there is a clash of civilizations, it is not possible to be a Muslim and a Westerner, and the West hates us. And you are inadvertently playing their game. You are helping them.”

Khan argued that the travel ban promotes a “wrong impression” of Islam. “I’m a Westerner, but also a very proud Muslim,” he explained. “There are some people who want to divide our communities. I’m not going to let them.” The mayor called Trump an “ignorant” leader whom Great Britain should not invite for an official state visit because “his policies go against everything we stand for.” Khan continued: “I think at a time when the president of the United States is doing and saying so many things that we disagree with, the idea of just rolling out the red carpet and having a state visit is wrong.”

The mayor, who has clashed with the president before, claimed he has been an “unwilling participant” in his war of words with Trump. In June, the president criticized Khan’s response to violence in London. “At least seven dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is ‘no reason to be alarmed!’” Trump tweeted. Multiple news outlets reported that the mayor was simply telling his constituents to not worry about the increased police presence on the city’s streets. He was explaining that more officers were being deployed in the search for the assailants.

Trump fired back by calling that a “pathetic excuse” which reporters were “working hard to sell.” The mayor’s office declared that Khan “has more important things to do than respond to Donald Trump’s ill-informed tweet that deliberately takes out of context his remarks urging Londoners not to be alarmed when they saw more police — including armed officers — on the streets.” In July, after Trump lashed out at Khan again, the mayor told the Guardian: “We’re not schoolchildren. He’s the president of the United States, so I’m unclear what his beef is with me.”

At the Labour Party conference, Khan downplayed fears about the consequences of England’s withdrawal from the European Union (known as Brexit). When asked whether London is in “real trouble,” he said “no” and advised: “Don’t believe the hype. … Let’s wait and see.”
