Lindsey Graham: Hard-Left Taking Over Democratic Party, Left Has Gone 'Insane'

The “hard left” wing of the Democratic Party “is going insane” in its resistance to President Trump’s policies, Sen. Lindsey Graham declared Sunday on Fox News.

According to Newsmax, the veteran Republican lawmaker from South Carolina told interviewer Maria Bartiromo: “It has everything to do with the Democratic base and the hard left taking over the Democratic Party. … I think they are going crazy. They are turning their party over to the most liberal people in the country. It's going to have an effect on the country and an effect on them.”

Graham, referring to the Democratic minority leader of the Senate, added: “Chuck Schumer has been a destructive force, in my opinion, when it comes to traditions of the Senate.”

Graham also weighed in on the debate over Trump’s pick for the Supreme Court, Neil Gorsuch. The judge’s confirmation should be “a home run,” according to the senator, but Democrats were threatening to conduct a filibuster that would take 60 Senate votes to end. Republican leaders were considering the “nuclear option,” requiring a simple majority of 51 senators to confirm Gorsuch.

“I am hoping I don’t have to do (the nuclear option),” Graham said. “I’m hoping eight Democrats will realize this is one of the best choices available to President Trump — he could not have done better — and give him 60 votes so we don’t turn the Senate upside down.”

The senator dismissed Schumer’s filibuster threat as “just all politics,” adding: “I hope some people in the (Democratic) party care about the Senate and the country and will not go where Schumer leads them.” Graham said it would be “political demagoguery” to filibuster the confirmation vote.

The senator argued that Gorsuch is a worthy successor to Justice Antonin Scalia, who died last year. Legal experts predict Gorsuch would espouse views similar to those of the conservative Scalia. “Five hundred lawyers from the left, right, middle said he’s one of the most talented judges in the entire country,” Graham said. “A Republican president could not have chosen better than Neil Gorsuch.”
