Lindsey Graham Calls Trump Un-American, Urges Party Members To Rescind Endorsements

Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC) was appalled by Donald Trump's recent comments about judges. "This is the most un-American thing from a politician since Joe McCarthy," said Graham. "If anybody was looking for an off-ramp, this is probably it. There’ll come a time when the love of country will trump hatred of Hillary.”

Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, said in an interview that federal court Judge Gonzalo Curiel cannot be impartial because the Indiana-born judge is Mexican. Curiel is ruling over Trump University lawsuits, and Trump worries that Curiel will be biased because of Trump's outspoken plans about cracking down on illegal immigration from Mexico.

Trump also spoke out on Sunday in an interview with John Dickerson, saying he doesn't think that a Muslim judge could remain neutral either in presiding over his Trump University case. Trump also has advocated banning Muslims from entering the country.

"I don't think he's racist but he's playing the race card. And in the political process he's putting the race card on the table," Graham told CNN on Tuesday. "I think it's very un-American for a political leader to question whether a person can judge based on his heritage."

Graham worries that the Republican party has been ‘conned’ and that Trump will not be a reliable conservative candidate. Worse, he fears Trump’s comments will end up hurting the party by losing Republican seats in the senate.

While many Republicans can probably empathize with Graham’s feelings, it seems like for better or for worse, the party is stuck with him.
