Legislation Would Impose $100 Tax on Gun Sales

A Democratic congresswoman has proposed a federal tax on gun sales, Opposing Views reported.

The Reducing Gun Violence in Our Neighborhoods Act of 2015, filed by New York Rep. Nydia Velazquez, would force every buyer of a firearm to pay a $100 tax. According to Forbes, the measure also calls for a national database of missing weapons. Owners would be required to report stolen guns.

Velazquez wrote on her website that the legislation is “aimed at reducing the number of guns in circulation, bolstering anti-violence and mental-health programs, and addressing the issue of lost and stolen firearms.”

The lawmaker explained: “If making guns more expensive means fewer end up in commerce, I’m happy with that result. However, if guns are going to be sold, then those purchasing and selling them should pay for programs that can reduce the incidence of gun violence in our local communities.”

The idea is not a new one, according to Forbes, which pointed out that city officials in Seattle levied a $25 firearm-sale tax earlier this year. Gun-rights organizations have filed lawsuits claiming that the levy is illegal.

Opposing Views noted that there were more guns (310 million) than people (307 million) in the United States in 2009, according to the Congressional Research Service and the Population Reference Bureau.
