Laura Bush Reveals What She Really Thought When Leaving White House To Obamas

Serving as President of the United States is not for the faint of heart. One look at the various before-and-after pictures of past presidents tells you all you need to know about the toll that the pressures of the job can take.

An often overlooked sidebar to that story is the toll that it takes on the First Lady. While the responsibilities of the respective offices are vastly different, a toll is taken there as well.

There’s not too much downtime in their worlds either, and that requires them to be perpetually bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

As the Daily Mail shares, former First Lady Laura Bush has offered up some fascinating insight into that. She recently sat down for a chat with ‘CBS This Morning,’ and she went through some of the advice she would pass on to future First Ladies.

“Reflecting on her time in the White House, Mrs Bush, 70, said her proudest achievement as a first lady was launching the US-Afghan Women's Council to shine a spotlight on the plight of women in Afghanistan, who were marginalized and oppressed in their country,” the Mail reports.

“Asked by CBS This Morning hosts what advice she would offer future first ladies, Mrs Bush said, ‘start with what you know.’”

To that end, Bush prioritized literacy as one of her biggest initiatives. The former librarian was drawing from an area of strength, as she worked as a librarian and a teacher in her younger days.

“Reflecting on her role as a first lady, Mrs Bush said she had the ‘huge advantage’ of watching and learning from her mother-in-law, Barbara Bush, whom she described as a major influence in her life,” the Mail adds.

“When CBS presenter Charlie Rose quipped that as the wife of the president, she had George W Bush’s ear in the morning and at night before bed, Laura Bush coyly conceded with a smile: 'you certainly have a lot of influence.’”

As for when it came time for her to leave the White House to the Obamas, Bush offered up a candid assessment of how she was feeling about things.

“I think there's a slight sigh of relief just because you don't feel absolutely responsible all the time, and of course that's what the president feels,” she said.

We would assume that there must be a gigantic sense of relief not having the weight of the world on your shoulders any longer. That means different things to the president and the First Lady, but it’s safe to say some relief is felt on both ends.

Everyone handles pressure differently. Some thrive under it, while others manage to pull through with a stiff upper lip while being overwhelmed behind the scenes.

Bush offered up no specific advice for current First Lady Melania Trump, but the world is watching to see how she responds to the pressures. While she does a fantastic job whenever she’s out in public, we’ll have to wait and see how she grows into the role and if she’ll become even more active.
