Koch Brother Rails Against Trump’s Immigration Ban

Billionaire Charles Koch, one of the Republican Party’s top campaign fundraisers, has added his voice to the chorus of voices criticizing President Trump’s executive action on immigration.

The Daily Mail reported that Koch, an influential conservative who created the Tea Party, called Trump “authoritarian” for seeking to temporarily ban all war refugees as well as visitors from seven Muslim countries. The action violates the nation’s belief in “free and open societies,” according to Koch. He warned that the “travel ban is the wrong approach and will likely be counterproductive.”

Erick Brimen, one of the 550 GOP donors who give their money to the Koch brothers’ political action committee, argued that “it doesn’t do any good for us to be positioned as hating whole classes of people.”

The presidential order, which Trump signed without having received any legal advice, prompted tens of thousands of people to hold protests in dozens of U.S. cities. Many of the demonstrations took place Saturday, when immigration authorities began detaining travelers that the executive action targeted.

After a federal judge used an injunction to temporarily stop enforcement of the order, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly explained that officials would consider individual immigrants on a “case-by-case” basis. That allowed permanent U.S. residents with green cards to re-enter the country after traveling abroad.
