Kasich Casts Write-in Presidential Vote For McCain

The absentee ballot that Republican Gov. John Kasich of Ohio filled out this week featured Arizona Sen. John McCain as a write-in selection for president, according to the Daily Mail.

Kasich, who competed for the GOP nomination, vowed when he ended his campaign in June that only a “biblical conversion” could persuade him to vote for Donald Trump. The governor acknowledged that not supporting a member of his party for president would be “as painful as a divorce.” However, referring to Trump, he told reporters: “I’m a uniter, and it’s hard for me to go for somebody who’s a divider.”

After last month’s release of an 11-year-old audio recording in which Trump could be heard admitting that he had frequently kissed and fondled women against their will, Kasich issued a statement blasting the real-estate mogul. “'Donald Trump is a man I cannot and should not support,” he wrote. “The actions of the last day are disgusting, but that’s not why I reached this decision. It has been an accumulation of his words and actions that many have been warning about. I will not vote for a nominee who has behaved in a manner that reflects so poorly on our country. Our country deserves better.”

Chris Schrimpf, a Kasich spokesman, told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that the governor voted for every Republican contender on his ballot other than Trump. However, because McCain is not one of the 11 certified write-in presidential candidates in Ohio, election officials will reject the entire ballot, the Daily Mail reported.
