John Kerry Advises Palestinians To 'Not Yield To Trump's Demands'

The Obama administration’s secretary of state reportedly ridiculed President Trump in a recent conversation with a Palestinian contact.

The Daily Caller reported that, according to Maariv and The Jerusalem Post, Kerry gave a man named Hussein Agha messages to deliver to Palestinian leaders. The former State Department chief allegedly urged them to “hold on and stay strong … and play for time.”

He said the Palestinians should “not yield to Trump’s demands.” The president has expressed strong support for Israel.

Kerry, the Democratic presidential nominee in 2004, purportedly suggested that he might make another White House bid in 2020. He predicted that Trump’s presidency will end within a year, according to the Israeli sources.

Kerry is 74 years of age, three years older than Trump.

Kerry reportedly has volunteered his services as a negotiator to Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the state of Palestine and the Palestinian National Authority. “Maybe it is time for the Palestinians to define their peace principles and present a positive plan,” Kerry said, pledging to take advantage of his connections and talents to forge a compromise.

He told Agha to ask Abbas to refrain from lashing out at the United States or the administration. Instead, he said the leader should focus on refuting Trump’s positions on contentious Middle East issues.

The sources alleged that Kerry was extremely critical of Trump in his discussion with Agha, telling the intermediary that the U.S. political establishment and the intelligence community oppose the administration. The ex-diplomat claimed he could launch a new peace process involving Europe, Arab countries and other nations.

Maariv, which cited a “senior Palestinian Authority official” as its source, reported that Kerry’s meeting with Agha in London was a lengthy talk. The news outlet described the Palestinian contact as a “close associate” of Abbas.

Agha is a longtime negotiator, having played a key role in crafting the Beilin-Abbas agreement in the 1990s. Like many such pacts over the years, the agreement failed to end the conflicts in the Middle East.

The Palestinian National Authority confirmed that the London meeting took place, according to The Jerusalem Post. Agha said Kerry seems to be “crazy about things, very energetic, and someone who is yearning to help realize the dream of peace between Israelis and Palestinians.”

It was not the first time Kerry had traveled to England’s capital to discuss Israeli-Palestinian matters. While heading the State Department from 2010-13, he led secret negotiations there that were known as the “London Track.”

Among those involved was a representative of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In an op-ed, The Post predicted that Netanyahu will point to Kerry’s meeting with Agha as evidence that the former secretary of state is “obsessed and messianic” in supporting the Palestinians.

The newspaper added: “It should be remembered that Kerry is an old friend of Netanyahu and has been a consistent supporter of Israel for decades. He believes that a genuine peace process is essential for both sides and for the survival of the state of Israel, and that the two-state solution is the only realistic option that will enable Israel to continue to maintain its character as a Jewish democratic state.”

Kerry is a former governor of Massachusetts who ran for president in 2004 and 2008.
