Joe Scarborough Unloads On Trump In Scathing Op-Ed - Discusses His Departure From GOP
Popular ‘Morning Joe’ host, Joe Scarborough has defended his decision to leave the ‘Grand Old Party’ (GOP) in a scathing op-ed. The longtime Republican, who titled his op-ed ‘Trump is Killing the Republican Party’, announced his decision to leave the party during his guest appearance on the ‘The Late Show’ with Stephen Colbert.
Mr. Scarborough has slammed a number of congressmen and women who have “shamelessly” stood by the current President of the United States, Donald Trump, who he has labeled as a “longtime Democrat who switched parties after the promotion of a racist theory about Barack Obama.” According to Mr. Scarborough, the current president has changed political alliances at least five times since the 1980’s, claiming to have a “diverse” range of political views. Mr. Scarborough, who was elected to four terms in Congress from Florida starting in 1994, announced his decision to leave the party alongside his co-host and fiancée, Mika Brzezinski, during their appearance on The Late Show. “I am a republican, but I’m not going to be a Republican anymore,” Mr. Scarborough revealed, confirming that he has decided to register as an independent voter.
The scornful op-ed went on to label the Republican party as “dying”, with Mr. Scarborough affirming that he “can no longer defend” the actions of President Trump. “It would take far more than a single column to detail Trump’s failures in the months following his bleak inaugural address… neither Lincoln, William Buckley nor Ronald Reagan would recognize this movement.”
Despite being friendly with President Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign, Mr. Scarborough’s support for the president has been diminishing ever since. Referring to a quote from America’s first Republican president, Mr. Abraham Lincoln, Mr. Scarborough reiterated that “nearly all men can stand adversity. But if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” Mr. Scarborough went on to confirm that President Trump, and the Republican party as a whole, “are already finding themselves spectacularly failing Abraham Lincoln’s character exam.”
“The Republican leaders who have subjugated themselves to the White House’s corrupting influence fell short of Lincoln’s standard long before their favorite reality-TV star brought his gaudy circus act to Washington,” Mr. Scarborough stated, expressing his distaste at the handling of foreign policy and nationwide budgets since the turn of the new century. “George W. Bush and the GOP Congress… [turned] a $155 billion surplus into a $1 trillion deficit and doubling the national debt, passing a $7 trillion unfunded entitlement program and promoting a foreign policy so utopian it would have made Woodrow Wilson blush.”
Despite being given a second chance to “prove themselves worthy,” Mr. Scarborough has reiterated that the “majority of Americans regret,” giving the GOP that “second chance.” Mr. Scarborough hopes that Donald Trump will be a “historical anomaly,” however, with the Russian investigation deepening and the president struggling to pass any meaningful legislation, Mr. Scarborough predicts that the Trump presidency will break the “Republican party…into pieces.”
This, according to Mr. Scarborough, could be a positive result, leading to “the election of independent thinkers no longer tethered to the tired dogmas of the polarized past. When that day mercifully arrives, the two-party duopoly that has strangled American politics for almost two centuries will finally come to an end. And Washington just may begin to work again.”
