Joe Biden Puts The Rumors To Rest: He's Not Running In 2020

Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton shocked her party and left them scrambling when she lost the 2016 election to GOP candidate Donald Trump. Democrats essentially thought they had a slam-dunk candidate, and now they're left in the lurch wondering where the party will go from here. There has been much murmuring about who would run in the 2020 election, and possibly save the party. One top Democrat that many hoped to see step up has said he's stepping down: it's not going to happen.

Former Vice President Joe Biden spoke at the annual Democratic Party dinner in New Hampshire on Sunday. The McIntyre-Shaheen 100 Club dinner was a gesture to thank supporters of Hillary Clinton during the 2016 campaign. He disappointed the audience when he said in no uncertain terms that he does not plan to run for president. "Guys, I’m not running!" he told the crowd, and the news was met with a collective groan.

"I’m ready to help raise money, recruit candidates, campaign — so is Barack [Obama] — wherever you want, just let me know," he promised, but he will not be throwing his hat into the ring.

Biden sat out the 2016 election because as the campaign took off, he suffered a tremendous blow when his son, Beau, passed away. Beau had been battling brain cancer, and Biden was simply not up to a grueling campaign after such a devastating loss.

The former VP has stated in the past, after President Trump won, that he regrets not running against him. Biden thinks he could have beaten Trump, and the Democrats would have won the White House again.

Biden, age 74, would be turning 78 in the same month as the 2020 election. That would make him the oldest presidential candidate in history; he'd be six years older than GOP candidate John McCain was when he ran for president in 2008. Back then, Democrats argued that McCain was too old.
