Jindal: People Should Be Able To Defend Themselves

Americans should be permitted to carry guns into any public place, including movie theaters, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said Wednesday.

“I’m a big believer that where you are legally allowed to be, you should be able to have your Second Amendment rights, as well,” the Republican presidential candidate told CNN host Wolf Blitzer. “There are private property rights issues, I understand that. Somebody has a right to say what they want to do with their private property, but I think the fewer restrictions on law-abiding citizens, the better for them and the better for our country.”

The Hill pointed out that the interview took place just a week after a gunman killed two movie-goers and injured nine others in Jindal’s home state. The governor suggested that if people in the audience had been armed, they might have been able to defend themselves.

He has called for more stringent background-check requirements for gun buyers, including a ban on firearms sales to the mentally ill.

“I’m not in favor of new laws restricting the rights of law-abiding citizens, but what we’ve done in Louisiana, we’ve strengthened the reporting of those who have been involuntarily committed,” Jindal said on CNN. He declared that the theater shooter, who had a history of mental illness, “never should have been able to buy a gun.”
