Country Star In Hot Water Over What She Said About National Anthem Protests

Based on the fact that our country is divided on a number of political issues, it shouldn’t be all that surprising that the nation has differing views on the various National Anthem protests that took place at NFL stadiums during this week’s games.

By extension, it would be natural to assume that there are differing opinions in NFL locker rooms about the issue. It’s statistically impossible for every single person that’s associated with the NFL in some way, shape, or form to feel the exact same way about anthem protests.

As Yahoo shares, further evidence for that fact has been provided by Country star Jessie James Decker, whose husband, Eric Decker, is a wide receiver for the Tennessee Titans. As she explains it, her husband wasn’t clear on his team’s response to President Donald Trump’s controversial comments.

The Titans were at home to face off against the Seattle Seahawks, and both teams remained in the locker room while the anthem played.

“My husband was not made aware it was time to go out for the game. Unfortunately a decision was made for him without him knowing,” she claimed while speaking with TMZ.

Decker provided more detailed thoughts on how she feels about the anthem protests in a post on Facebook.

“One of my favorite things to do is sing the national anthem. I think about my dad, my uncles, my cousins, both grandfathers who fought in the Vietnam war. I think about how my grandfather paw paw Tim would ask me to sing this song for him every time I saw him and how he would make me turn the other way to sing it so he could just weep and cry as hard as he wanted because it meant so much to him. When I sing this song I think about them,” she wrote. “This song is about them. It’s not about me. That’s what I think about every time I sing it. I love our country so much. And we should all love and respect each other because this is the greatest country in the world. I see the love. I see the unity in all walks of life on a daily basis and It makes me so proud to be an American….. so In the words of Forrest Gump. That’s all I have to say about that.”

Unsurprisingly, reaction was mixed to her comments.

“I’m such a huge fan of yours, but this was a rambling, unnecessary post,” shared one user. “Of course you’ve had different experiences than these men, but that doesn’t negate theirs. You have several platforms to promote your agenda — let other people use theirs in a peaceful way as well. THAT is what your grandfathers fought for.”

“Thank you for showing decency and respect to our flag and what it truly represents!” wrote another commenter.

The matter clearly came to a head this weekend. In fairness to the players and teams, they collectively felt as if their hands were forced by Trump’s comments. Hence, they felt the need to respond. While that part is understandable, there’s a wide swath of NFL fans that find themselves quite offended by what they view as disrespect for the anthem and flag.

In a perfect world, the fact that it has now come to a head will lead to the realization that there may be better ways for players to make their points about issues they feel passionate about.
