Jeb Bush is to the Right of His Brother on Abortion

When it comes to abortion, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is more conservative than his ex-president brother, according to The Huffington Post.

That might surprise some voters because of the younger Bush’s reputation for being more moderate than his brother, the news site noted. Similarities and differences in the two men’s policy positions came under increased scrutiny this week, after the ex-president attended an event in Dallas, Texas, to help raise money for Jeb Bush’s anticipated presidential bid.

George W. Bush, who calls himself “pro-life,” signed the Partial Birth Abortion Ban in 2003. However, the following year, he refused to commit to appointing only judges who favored overturning the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade ruling. “The answer is, no, I will not have a litmus test," he said.

The former president also clashed with some conservatives by supporting abortion rights for victims of rape and incest, as well as when a mother’s life is at stake. In 2007, he signed legislation providing an additional $16.8 million to the Title X federal family planning program, which funds Planned Parenthood.
In contrast, Jeb Bush described himself in 2003 as “probably the most pro-life governor in modern times."

As Florida’s chief executive, he signed a bill allowing residents to fund anti-abortion groups by purchasing “Choose Life” license plates.
