Jeb Bush Blames Obama for Cyber Attack on the Government

Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush, commenting about the recent hacking of government computers, accused President Obama of failing to take the threat of cyber attacks “seriously,” according to Politico.

The hacking reportedly compromised the personal information of current and former federal employees. Officials believe the Chinese government is responsible.

Bush posted his allegations on the publishing platform Medium. He wrote: “A recent inspector general report indicates that vulnerabilities to OPM’s systems had been identified as much as a year ago. And no one can suggest the government did not understand the value of millions of personnel records. … OPM officials knew this data was valuable, knew it was sensitive, and knew it was vulnerable.”

The candidate asked: “What use is it that President Obama issued an executive order or gave a thoughtful speech about cyber security if his own Office of Personnel Management ... failed to take basic steps to protect the sensitive personal information of millions of its employees?”

Politico noted that Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, plans to question two contractors the OPM hired to conduct background checks on the agency’s job applicants. The contractors may have done something to make the data available to hackers.
