Jackie O's Former Assistant Claims JFK Jr. Would've Run For President If He Were Still Alive

Ever since John F. Kennedy Jr.’s untimely death in a plane crash in 1999, there has been a ton of chatter about what might have been. He was the natural torchbearer for the Kennedy family political legacy, but he showed no inclination that he was going to be throwing his hat into the ring. That being said, he delivered a number of memorable speeches during his time that clearly demonstrated he could write his own ticket. He was immensely popular and well-spoken, and he would’ve immediately become the frontrunner for the office of his choosing if he had chosen to go the political route.

As the Daily Mail shares, one person with close ties to the Kennedy family feels that he eventually would have acquiesced to demands and pursued presidential aspirations as he got older. Kathy McKeon, 72, was an assistant for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and she actually stayed with the former First Lady when she lived in New York City. She watched the Kennedy children grow up, and she recently relayed her thoughts in a story about Caroline Kennedy for Avenue Magazine.

“If her brother wasn’t gone, he’d probably be running for president,” McKeon said.

That’s a popular thought among political observers, in spite of the fact that it’s something that never rose above the level of speculation while he was alive. Kennedy seemed to be perfectly content with his life as it was. He as at the helm of the well-regarded ‘George’ magazine, and the sought-after bachelor was off the market after he tied the knot with wife Carolyn. Sadly, Carolyn was on board the plane with Kennedy on the night of the crash, as was her sister. The trio had taken off in a private aircraft with a destination of Martha’s Vineyard, but they never arrived.

A furious search and rescue mission would eventually uncover the plane’s wreckage, and the Kennedy family was left to mourn another tragedy. As for his sister, Caroline, McKeon sees a pretty bright future up ahead.

“When Caroline was growing up, she always said she wanted to be a wife and mother, and she is a very good mother. But the Kennedys are go-getters who never give up, and after John died, I think Caroline had that sense of duty in her to follow in her father’s footsteps, and I believe she’ll pull it off,” she said. “I really think she might be the first lady president.”

There have been some rumblings that Caroline is considering a run for Congress, and many observers view that as a potential launching pad for a future presidential run for her. She has previously served as Ambassador to Japan for President Obama, and she has remained active in public service. Caroline certainly has the name recognition to mount a challenge, but it’s unclear if she really has her eyes on the Oval Office or not. We’ll have to wait and see how that turns out, but we may not have seen the last Kennedy in the White House after all.
