Ivanka Trump Is Being Given Credit For Trump's Syrian Strike Decision
According to Eric Trump, his sister Ivanka urged their father to bomb Syria last Thursday in retaliation for a chemical-weapons attack that killed more than 80 Syrian civilians two days earlier.
President Trump directed the Navy to launch 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles from an aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean Sea. The target was a Syrian military airfield where some of the planes involved in the chemical attack may have been based. The missile strikes reportedly destroyed several aircraft and killed at least seven people.
According to CNN, Eric Trump told The Daily Telegraph he is certain that Ivanka played a role in the decision to punish Syrian President Bashar Assad, whom U.S. officials accused of ordering the chemical attack. “Ivanka is a mother of three kids and she has influence,” the president’s second-oldest son told the British news outlet. “I’m sure she said, ‘Listen, this is horrible stuff.’”
Eric Trump pointed out that his sister, as well as their father, were upset by televised images of children suffering from sarin-gas exposure. “I stay out of politics and I stay out of the administration, but you can tell (the president) was deeply affected by those images of the children,” he said. Unlike Ivanka, Eric is not working in the White House. His dad put him and older brother Don Jr. in charge of the family’s worldwide business empire following last year’s election.
On Monday, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer acknowledged that “there is no question Ivanka and others weighed in.” However, the spokesman did not indicate whether the “first daughter,” who has an office in the West Wing as an assistant to the president, called for the use of military force.
Last Wednesday, Ivanka Trump tweeted: “Heartbroken and outraged by the images coming out of Syria following the atrocious chemical attack yesterday.” After the missile strikes, she told her Twitter followers: “The times we are living in call for difficult decisions. Proud of my father for refusing to accept these horrendous crimes against humanity.”
