Ivanka Trump Accused Of Cultural Appropriation For Attire During India Trip

For most folks, it’s pretty standard practice to attempt to match the local style when traveling abroad. It’s a simple nod of respect to the country that you’ve traveled to, and it can even be a little fun to step out of normal comfort zones.

But when does a simple nod to the local culture cross the line into cultural appropriation? According to one recent report, we can use Ivanka Trump’s recent overseas trip as an example.

As the Daily Mail shares, Ivanka has been absolutely obliterated by overseas outlets for her choice of attire during her recent trip. The First Daughter wore a number of Oriental-style gowns while attending several events in India, and critics feel she crossed the line into cultural appropriation.

An outlet known as the Daily O was none too kind while offering up its assessment of her fashion choices.

“It referenced India with the embroidery, but in reality looked like a cheap brand ripping off designer Rahul Mishra. In her defense, Ivanka's outfit changes have been kept in character with her previous wardrobe choices,” the report said. “Being totally tone-deaf to the nuances of public appearance (to be fair, she only has her father as her role model). While she had the choice of picking the most amazing designers, she selected a cherry blossom print, kimono-inspired dress made by the Colombian designer Johanna Ortiz.”

Needless to say, the outlet didn’t care for her attire. That said, was it really necessary to take a shot at her father in such a way? The outlet would outdo itself by going on to say that Ivanka
'represents (the) American dream (of being) a botoxed Barbie.'

While we can easily dismiss the review as one that was far too much on the catty side of the ledger, it was so far over the top that it makes you question if it had anything to do with fashion choices at all.

Bandana Tewari, editor at large of Vogue India, was also none too pleased with Ivanka’s fashion choices - but she would at least offer up some actual reasons for her displeasure.

“We would rather see her wear a hand-woven sari made in our country or a handmade gown made in her own country,” she said. “But to hybridize the two, in an era of unfiltered diversity, is a superfluous nod to half-acceptance.”

Fair enough, and presenting the argument in such a way makes it seem as if perhaps Ivanka did miss the mark in some way. So did she? We can’t answer that with 100 percent certainty, but she looked as fashionable as ever from our perspective.

That said, perhaps some marks were missed that only those with a discerning eye for the latest in Oriental-style fashion would be able to attest to.

In any event, it’s clear that Ivanka can’t get away from negative press even when she’s abroad. While that comes with the territory due to her high profile, we’ll still contend that the hostile tones she constantly encounters can be toned down a notch or twelve.
