IRS Admits Immigrants Are Stealing Social Security Numbers

The Internal Revenue Service is not informing people when undocumented immigrants use their Social Security numbers to apply for employment, according to agency director John Koskinen.

Breitbart News reported that the official, in testimony before the Senate Finance Committee, explained: “Obviously, the priority for the taxpayers and the IRS is collecting those taxes” from the migrants, rather than contacting identity-theft victims.

“What happens in these situations is someone is using a Social Security number to get a job,” Koskinen said. He noted that immigrants “are filing their tax return with their ITIN” (federal taxpayer identification number). “These are undocumented aliens. … They’re paying taxes. It’s in everybody’s interest to have them pay the taxes they owe,” he said, adding that the IRS never informs citizens when their Social Security numbers have been stolen.

One of the committee members, Republican Sen. Dan Coats of Indiana, accused the agency of failing to act when immigrants use numbers that do not belong to them. He said the IRS is giving tax refunds to the illegal border crossers.

Koskinen responded: “There are questions about whether there’s a way we could simply advise people. A lot of the time those Social Security numbers are borrowed from friends and acquaintances, and they know they’ve been used. Other times they don’t.”
