Iran Missile Tests Violate Nuclear Agreement

Iran’s government news service on Tuesday announced that “ballistic missiles were fired from silos” at multiple locations to demonstrate the country’s “deterrent power,” according to Agence France-Presse.

The military exercises proved Iran’s “all-out readiness to confront threats,” IRNA state television reported. The nation’s critics allege that the provocative action violated sanctions the United States imposed on Iran in January, as well as the nuclear agreement U.S. diplomats and others negotiated with Iran last July.

Iranian officials, referring to an Islamic doctrine, boasted that the ballistic missile tests conducted by the Revolutionary Guards symbolized “The Power of Velayat.” Agence France-Presse noted that supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, rather than President Hassan Rouhani, is in charge of the guards.

Some analysts suggested the exercises were designed to show Iran hard-liners’ defiance of the nuclear agreement. The deal calls for Iran to curtail its uranium-enrichment program, which Western officials fear could quickly lead to the development of nuclear weapons. In return, the United States and other countries agreed to lift some of the sanctions they imposed on the Middle Eastern country.

The recent incident was not the first time Iran has violated the agreement. It conducted two tests, involving missiles in underground bunkers, in October. United Nations officials declared two months later that the operation breached the negotiated deal.
