Inmate Begins Making Specific Demands, Sheriff Responds Perfectly

A Muslim inmate filed a lawsuit against a sheriff's office for violating his Constitutional rights. He claims the jail refused to cater to his religious dietary restrictions. According to the sheriff, the Muslim man didn't even ask for a special meal.

Gannon Thomas, a 27-year-old Muslim man in the Boone County jail for possession of drug paraphernalia, claims the jail refused to serve him food that was permitted in his religion. He's employed the help of the American Civil Liberties Union to sue the Boone County Sheriff's Office, saying they gave him food that was forbidden by his faith.

Muslims have strict dietary restrictions about what foods they're allowed to eat, and how the foods are prepared. The law requires jails to make reasonable accommodations for religious obligations, such as dietary mandates.

It is likely the jail would have accommodated Thomas in this, had Thomas asked. According to the sheriff's official statement, he didn't.

“The fact that Inmate Gannon is alleging that we have discriminated against him by not serving him a ‘religious diet made of Halal food – food that adheres to Islamic Law’ because he is a practicing Muslim is not accurate in my opinion," said Sheriff Mike Nielsen in a statement. "I was not even aware that there was an issue that one of our inmates had, about the type of food he was receiving because of his religious practices.”

Thomas could have saved himself, the ACLU and Boone County a lot of trouble. But that would not have gotten him the attention he desired.
