Huckabee Says Obama’s Refugee Plan ‘Doesn’t Make Sense’

Syrian refugees should find temporary homes in or near their own countries, instead of coming to the United States, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee said Thursday.

Newsmax reported that the former Arkansas governor blamed the Obama administration’s “failed policies” for the rise of ISIS. The violence and destruction of the militant group’s expansion have forced hundreds of thousands of Syrians to escape from their country and seek sanctuary elsewhere.

Regarding President Obama’s proposal to accept 10,000 of the refugees next year, Huckabee said on “Morning Joe” on MSNBC: “It doesn’t make sense as much as it would to get these areas safe again and let them get home. It doesn’t mean we wouldn’t be of assistance, whether it’s to provide food, humanitarian aid, assistance to set up camps, but close to their region so that when they are ready to go back home, it’s not an 8,000-mile journey. How does it help them if they don’t speak our language, they don’t have jobs, to be able to function in our schools? Let’s give a grant, set up a genuine humanitarian effort to them.”

On another topic, the candidate declared that as president he “wouldn’t rule out” ordering the assassination of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Newsmax reported.

Huckabee’s campaign is floundering, with fewer than 5 percent of Republican primary voters supporting him in national polls. He failed to qualify for the prime-time debate Dec. 15, instead taking part in the “undercard” event featuring the four lowest-polling GOP White House hopefuls.
