In His First Speech As HUD Secretary, Ben Carson Says Slaves Were 'Immigrants With Dreams'

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson gave his first official speech in Washington on Monday and made some remarks that have caused quite a stir. The live-streamed speech was not well received as his point was largely taken out of context and twisted. Many jumped to slam the doctor for his comments.

In his speech, Carson talked about immigrants coming to America with a dream of a better life. He then reminded people, "There were other immigrants who came here on the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less."

He went on to explain that these people also had a dream that their progeny would 'pursue prosperity and happiness in this land'.

Carson clearly meant that Africans being brought to this foreign shore as slaves must have also had dreams of a better life for themselves and their families in the future, and no one would probably argue with that. By definition, an immigrant is someone from one country living in another country; the definition doesn't get into semantics about how a person came to live in a new country.

No one in the room, when Carson was delivering the speech, seemed to murmur or object to that notion. On social media, however, the comparison of people abducted and forcibly brought to America with people who come here willingly did not sit well with people.

"OK!! Ben Carson....I can't! Immigrants? In the bottom of SLAVE SHIPS??!! MUTHAF---A PLEASE!!!" responded actor Samuel L. Jackson.

"Every time I think you can't be any more of a sellout, you outdo yourself," another person tweeted to Carson.

Dr. Carson was a celebrated neurosurgeon, but he's gotten a lot of backlash as a politician for some of his unconventional views. It's not the first time Carson has said something about slavery that caused an uproar. The pro-life conservative once said women having abortions are treating their unborn babies the way slave owners once treated their slaves. He's also called the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) 'the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery'.
