Hillary Clinton: 'The Future Is Female'

Hillary Clinton, in a video speech for the MAKERS women’s leadership conference this week, told her audience that “the future is female.”

Breitbart News reported that last year’s Democratic presidential nominee cited the Women’s March on Washington on Jan. 21, the day after President Trump’s inauguration. “Despite all the challenges we face, I remain convinced that, yes, the future is female,” Clinton said. “Just look at the amazing energy we saw as women organized a march that galvanized millions of people all over our country and across the world.”

The annual march, which dates to President Wilson’s administration about a century ago, was originally designed as a demonstration for women’s rights. The event’s organizers later included environmental issues and other matters on the agenda. This year, much of the focus was on the new president, who has frequently demeaned women.

During the rally at the march in Washington, D.C., Madonna got under Trump’s skin when she admitted she had thought about blowing up the White House after the election. As the pop star continued bashing the new president, she using the “f” word several times. Trump responded by calling the singer “a disgrace.” Documentarian Michael Moore and actress Scarlett Johansson also spoke out against the president.

“Please set an example for every woman and girl out there who is worried about what the future holds, and wonders whether our rights, opportunities and values will endure,” Clinton said in the video. “And remember, you are the heroes, the history makers, the glass ceiling breakers of the future.”

According to NBC News, “the future is female” originated with activist lesbians in the 1970s. The phrase reappeared in 2015 on T-shirts and other products sold by Otherwild. The company’s owner, Rachel Berks, reportedly is a lesbian. She told NBC that she discovered the slogan on the Instagram account @herstory, which had posted an old picture of lesbian folk singer Alix Dobkin wearing a T-shirt bearing the words.

“It's pretty wild to hear Hillary Clinton drop 'The Future is Female,’” said Kelly Rakowski, who oversees the account. “I never thought that what I unearthed in the depths of the Internet would be such a broad, cultural sensation.”
