Herman Cain Urges Trump to Pick Gingrich As His VP

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump should choose Newt Gingrich as his running mate, 2012 GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain suggested Wednesday on Fox News.

Gingrich, a former Republican congressman from Georgia who served as speaker of the House in the 1990s, reportedly is among several people Trump is considering as a potential vice president. Others on the short list are Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions. Trump promised to announce his selection on Friday.

According to Politico, Cain argued that Gingrich “can be an attack dog and he is also a smart dog.” He said the ex-speaker “has the unique perspective of having been an insider and an outsider,” though “a lot of young people don’t even know about” his political history. “He is so knowledgeable of both domestic and international issues, he can attack people with the facts instead of just with erroneous statements like Hillary Clinton is doing,” Cain told the hosts of “Fox and Friends.”

Newsmax noted that on Tuesday, Fox News released Gingrich as a commentator. “Due to the intense media speculation about Gingrich’s potential selection as Donald Trump’s vice-presidential candidate, we felt it best to halt his contributor role on the network to avoid all conflicts of interest that may arise,” Jay Wallace, Fox News’ executive vice president for news, said in a statement, according to The Washington Post.
