Here's What China Is Thinking Of Doing To Those That Disrespect Country's Flag Or Anthem

As unfathomable as it may seem, things could actually be a whole lot worse in regards to the seemingly never-ending debate over National Anthem protests. While that’s pretty hard to digest for those that have had their fill of the debate, we need to look no further than to how things are being handled in another country. As the Independent Journal Review shares, China is considering some extreme measures for those that disrespect that country’s flag or anthem.

China's parliament is in the midst of discussing how to handle the situation, and there are actually talks to amend criminal law in response. So what could that mean for protesters in China? Those that disrespect the country’s flag or anthem could face three years behind bars. Allow that to sink in for a moment.

Chinese president Xi Jinping has been cracking down on free speech, and he’s been pushing legislation aimed at improving China’s national security. Back in September, legislation was passed that imposes a 15-day jail sentence on those that desecrate the flag or disrespect the country’s national anthem. There have been some instances in which fans at soccer matches in Hong Kong have booed the anthem, and those incidents prompted swift response from sports organizations.

Zhang Rongshun, the deputy head of the Legislative Affairs Commission in China's parliament, offered up some clarity on why changes are being sought.

“In recent years, incidents of disrespecting the national anthem had occurred in Hong Kong, challenging the bottom line of the principle of ‘one country, two systems’ and social morality and triggering rage among Chinese including most Hong Kong residents,” Rongshun said.

To be clear, nothing like this would fly on our shores, nor should it. On the off chance that something along these lines slipped through the cracks and became law, it would be tied up in the court system from here to eternity. As such, it would never be enforced. To further set our minds at ease, there are no suggestions from lawmakers that anything like this should be happening to those that disrespect the United States flag or National Anthem.

There’s a whole lot of differences between the United States and China, but this is one of the larger ones that should open up some eyes. For those that feel the need to protest the nation’s flag and anthem, it should be a particularly alarming wake-up call. The very things that they are protesting are what affords them the opportunity of expressing their views without fear of recrimination.

Few folks will be able to make a valid argument to suggest that everything is perfect in our country. It’s not. There’s work to be done in a lot of different areas, and we continue to hold out hope that progress will be made. That being said, things aren’t all that bad when you compare it with the alternatives. There’s plenty of opportunity out there for everyone if they choose to seek it out, and there’s also plenty of chances for folks to pitch in and fix the things that need fixing.

When you consider those two simple points, protesting seems a lot less appealing.
