Her Husband Voted For Trump - Does This, Leaves Him Speechless

One couple had been married for 22 years. They vowed to stay together in sickness and in health, for rich or for poor, in good times and in bad. Unfortunately, those marriage vows didn't include a note about political upheaval. The wife left the husband because he voted for Donald Trump.

Gayle McCormick, 73, knew that her husband was a Republican. As a liberal Democrat leaning socialist, Ms. McCormick could live with the differences in their political opinions. But the Bernie Sanders supporter found the last straw, the one that broke the camel's back. That straw was Donald Trump.

McCormick nearly chocked when she was having lunch with her husband, Bill, about a year ago with friends. Bill casually mentioned that he was planning to vote for Trump.

According to Ms. McCormick, that was a 'deal breaker.'

"It totally undid me that he could vote for Trump," said McCormick, who felt betrayed by her conservative husband's support of the unpopular candidate. It was at that moment she realized that even after 22 years, the marriage was ultimately doomed.

"I felt like I had been fooling myself," she said. "It opened up areas between us I had not faced before. I realized how far I had gone in my life to accept things I would have never accepted when I was younger."

The McCormick's haven't totally called it quits. They still see each other, and even travel together. But the marriage is in a state of suspension.

The McCormick's aren't alone. According to polls by Reuters/Ipsos, family upheavals over political differences are on the rise. More people are arguing with loved ones, have strained relationships, or have cut ties altogether. Some 14% of poll takers even admit that they've cut a family member or close friend out of their lives over differences in 2016 election.

But even as some relationships are ending, others are beginning. Nearly 60% of people say they've made a new close relation due to shared political opinions helping them bond with someone.
