Graham Calls Cruz A Good Choice For Supreme Court

Sen. Lindsey Graham, an outspoken critic of Ted Cruz during the presidential race, is now praising the Texas senator as a “gifted” and “talented” candidate for the Supreme Court.

According to Newsmax, Graham said Thursday that Cruz would “fill the bill” as the successor to the late Justice Antonin Scalia, whose death created a vacancy on the court. The Republican-controlled Congress has refused to hold hearings to confirm President Obama’s nominee, Judge Merrick Garland. Trump’s vow to pick a more conservative jurist has led to speculation that Cruz could be on the president-elect’s short list.

Trump and Graham frequently slammed Cruz when all three men were competing for the GOP presidential nomination. Cruz declined to endorse Trump, even at the party’s national convention in July, though the real-estate developer had secured enough delegates to ensure his nomination. The Texas senator later announced his support for Trump.

Graham admitted that “at times” he has had major conflicts with Cruz, but insisted that the two lawmakers “do have areas of agreement.” Graham told CNN: “Because you disagree with somebody doesn’t mean you take your disagreements to the point that you can't recognize reality. Nobody can tell me Ted Cruz is not a constitutionally gifted, talented lawyer, because he is.”

Newsmax noted that while Graham was still in the presidential race, he remarked: “if you kill Ted Cruz on the floor of the Senate, and the trial is at the Senate, no one will convict you.”
