GOP Leaders Worried About Trump Alienating Latino Voters

Donald Trump’s anti-Latino rhetoric could doom the Republican Party’s hopes of recapturing control of the White House, according to some top GOP officeholders and strategists.

CNN reported that the officials are particularly concerned about Trump’s criticism of the judge presiding in a fraud case involving the billionaire’s controversial university. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee has called Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who was born in Indiana, a “Mexican.”

In a column for Heatstreet, longtime GOP operative Rick Wilson told his fellow Republicans: “You own his politics. … You own the racial animus that started out as a bug, became a feature and is now the defining characteristic of his campaign. You own every crazy, vile chunk of word vomit that spews from his mouth.”

Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday: “I am concerned about that. America is changing. When Ronald Reagan was elected, 84 percent of the electorate was white. This November, 70 percent will be. It’s a big mistake for our party to write off Latino Americans, and they’re an important part of the country and soon to be the largest minority group in the country. I hope (Trump) will change his direction on that.”

House Speaker Paul Ryan told WISN radio in Milwaukee, Wis., on Friday: “Look, the comment about the judge just was out of left field, for my mind. It’s reasoning I don’t relate to. I completely disagree with the thinking behind that.”
