GOP Leaders Denounce Trump’s Anti-Muslim Plan

Donald Trump is coming under fire from Republicans, as well as Democrats, by calling for a ban on Muslims immigrating to the United States.

CNN reported that GOP critics of the presidential candidate’s proposal include Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee; House Speaker Paul Ryan; and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Ryan declared at a news conference that discriminating against members of a certain religion is “not who we are as a party.” He added: “This is not conservatism. Some of our best and biggest allies in this struggle and fight against radical Islam terror are Muslims.”

McConnell called Trump’s plan “completely inconsistent with American values,” according to CNN. “To show how completely and totally unworkable it would be, King Abdullah of Jordan, a great friend and ally of ours, would presumably not be able to come to the United States,” the Kentucky senator said. “How about President Ghani of Afghanistan, a great friend and ally of ours who would not be able to come to the United States? This suggestion is completely and totally inconsistent with American values.”

Priebus told the Washington Examiner on Tuesday: “We need to aggressively take on radical Islamic terrorism, but not at the expense of our American values.”
