GOP Leaders Blast Obama’s Anti-Terrorism Strategy

Following Tuesday night’s State of the Union address, Republicans accused President Obama of failing to outline a plan for destroying the Islamic State militant group.

“He didn’t have an answer for how to defeat (ISIS),” House Speaker Paul Ryan said. GOP Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, who chairs the Senate Homeland Security Committee, told The Hill: “We don’t have them contained. We don’t have a strategy for defeating ISIL, and that concerns me. The prospects are pretty grim right now.”

Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, added: “(Obama) made a comment that America is not under attack, that terrorists aren’t attacking here. Well, they are. The enemies are attacking. They attacked at Chattanooga, they attacked in California, they attacked in my district at Fort Hood. They are on the attack, and we did nothing but open the door for them.”

In his speech, the president downplayed the terrorist threat. “As we focus on destroying ISIL, over-the-top claims that this is World War III just play into their hands,” he said. “Masses of fighters on the back of pickup trucks and twisted souls plotting in apartments or garages pose enormous danger to civilians and must be stopped. But they do not threaten our national existence.”

Obama asked lawmakers to “take a vote” on giving his administration the authority to continue waging war against the Islamic State. The Hill noted that he has made the request multiple times, but Republicans are wary of granting him more power.
