GOP Lawmaker Wants More Rifles For Navy SEALs

Navy SEALs claim they are being forced to share rifles, according to Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter of California.

The congressman disclosed that the SEALs have appealed to him for help, Breitbart News reported. The soldiers say that when they complete an operation, they must turn over their weapons to newly deployed SEALs. Before the supply of rifles dwindled, the service members were allowed to hang onto their rifles for future assignments.

According to Fox News, Hunter argued that the nation should equip its armed forces with “fine-tuned” rifles designed for specific purposes, with the appropriate accessories. “They want their rifles. It’s their lifeline. So let them keep their guns until they’re assigned desk jobs at the Pentagon,” the lawmaker said.

Hunter pointed out that the Pentagon cannot blame the problem on insufficient funding. “Congress has frequently boosted the budgets of special-operations forces in the years since the 9/11 attacks,” the congressman said, adding that rifles are “among the least expensive items” in the military. He criticized “the priorities of Naval Special Warfare Command” and declared: “There is so much wasteful spending. Money is not reaching the people it needs to reach.”

Hunter also reported that the SEALs are concerned about a shortage of ammunition. The soldiers told him that training ammunition “is being used for combat missions.”
