GOP Chairman Thinks Scalise Shooting Will Win Special Election For The Republicans

Last week’s horrifying shooting at the congressional baseball practice session in Virginia nearly killed Steve Scalise, the serving House Majority Whip. Despite the horrendous circumstances, the GOP chairman of Georgia’s 11th Congressional District, Brad Carver, has not shied away from using the incident to make a political statement. Mr Carver recently made headlines after telling a reporter from the Washington Post that the shooting would help win over Georgia residents to vote for the GOP and secure victory in the high-stakes special election in the 6th Congressional District of Georgia (GA-06).

Mr. Carver’s blunt comments made waves when his statements were released by the Post. “I’ll tell you what: I think the shooting is going to win this election for us,” Carver declared. “Because moderates and independents in this district are tired of left-wing extremism. I get that there’s extremists on both sides, but we are not seeing them. We’re seeing absolute resistance to everything this president does.”

The GA-06 is shaping up to be the most expensive congressional race in U.S. history, with both groups collectively raising approximately $60 million in campaign funding. Renowned as a safe district, the GOP has held the 6th district since 1979. However, recent polling indicates that the young Democrat, a 30-year-old upstart named Jon Ossoff, has a slight advantage over his rival, 55-year-old Karen Handel.

Expenses notwithstanding, the political significance of the GA-06 race has become increasingly important to Republican morale. Considering President Trump’s slumping approval rating and ongoing controversy, maintaining the GA-06 would be some much-welcomed good news. President Trump recently added to the hype, tweeting: “Karen Handle’s opponent in #GA06 can’t even vote in the district he wants to represent.” The president quickly deleted this tweet, before reposting it with the correct spelling of the GOP candidate’s name.

Conversely, if Ossoff manages to defy expectations and secure the crucial seat, it will be a huge rallying point for Democrats. The early months of Donald Trump’s presidency have been characterised by widespread social and political polarization. Many Democrats are looking to the GA-06 race to get a feel of how strong the anti-Trump movement really is.

For better or for worse, the Virginia baseball shooting has become a crucial fixture of this critical House race. The shooter, James Hodgkinson, formerly volunteered for Bernie Sanders during the 2016 presidential election and was a virulent critic of Donald Trump. Although the shooter’s ideological reasoning has been decried by both Democrats and Republicans, Mr. Carver’s comments insinuate that left-wing violence will continue under Ossoff, an idea that has been repeated in a GA-06 campaign advertisement. Both Handel and Ossoff have received numerous death threats, prompting a massive escalation in security measures as police and federal organizations work to prevent another shooting.

Despite Ossoff’s slim lead, Mr Carver remains confident that Handel will pull out in front, emphasizing that “It’ll be close, but we’ll win it…And I really do think the congressional baseball shooting is going to decide the election.”
