GOP Calls For Special Counsel To Investigate Clinton And Lynch

Hillary Clinton should be the subject of an investigation by a federal special counsel, Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee proclaimed Thursday.

According to CNBC, the lawmakers also called on the Justice Department to look into possible wrongdoing by former FBI Director James Comey and the Obama administration’s attorney general, Loretta Lynch. In a letter to current Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his deputy, Rod Rosenstein, the Republicans declared that they were asking for “assistance in restoring public confidence in our nation’s justice system and its investigators, specifically the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

Referring to special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe of alleged collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign to interfere in last year’s presidential race, the GOP representatives wrote that they were “not confident that other matters related to the 2016 election and aftermath are similarly under investigation.”

The letter explained: “The unbalanced, uncertain and seemingly unlimited focus of the special counsel’s investigation has led many of our constituents to see a dual standard of justice that benefits only the powerful and politically well-connected. For this reason, we call on you to appoint a second special counsel to investigate a plethora of matters connected to the 2016 election and its aftermath, including actions taken by previously public figures like (Clinton, Comey and Lynch).

“Our call for a special counsel is not made lightly. We have no interest in engendering more bad feelings and less confidence in the process or governmental institutions by the American people. Rather, our call is made on their behalf. It is meant to determine whether the criminal prosecution of any individual is warranted based on the solemn obligation to follow the facts wherever they lead and applying the law to those facts.”

CNBC pointed out that Justice officials announced last year they would not prosecute Clinton or anyone else at the department for how they dealt with classified government information. Following his investigation of Clinton, Comey recommended the filing of no charges against the former secretary of state even though he accused her of being “extremely careless” with a private email server. He said “no reasonable prosecutor” would pursue a case.

The GOP members of the Judiciary Committee echoed the sentiments of President Trump, who recently demanded another probe of Clinton’s actions at the State Department. He said that in addition to the private server controversy, she should face federal scrutiny for her fundraising activities on behalf of the Clinton Foundation.

Rosenstein appointed Mueller in May, after Sessions had recused himself from the Trump-Russia inquiry because of his two meetings with Russia’s ambassador to the United States during the 2016 race. The former Republican senator from Alabama was an adviser and campaign surrogate for Trump. He was the first senator to endorse the GOP presidential nominee.

Mueller and his legal team are not only examining the election-meddling and collusion charges. They also want to find out if the president’s business empire poses conflicts of interest, and whether Trump obstructed justice when he fired Comey in May and later admitted he did so to thwart the FBI’s Russian investigation.
