Giuliani: Trump Is Wrong About Muslims Cheering 9/11

Rudy Giuliani, the mayor of New York City on 9/11, disputes Donald Trump’s claim that thousands of Muslims cheered when the planes crashed into the World Trade Center.

The Republican presidential candidate is “exaggerating,” Giuliani told CNN on Tuesday. “We did have some celebrating, that is true,” he said. “We had pockets of celebration, some in Queens, some in Brooklyn; 10, 12, 30, 40 (people).”

The ex-mayor recalled a report of some cheering inside a candy store owned by a Muslim. He said a group of children from the neighborhood assaulted the celebrants.

Regarding Trump’s version of events, Giuliani commented: “I don’t want to say he’s not telling the truth or not. Let him deal with it. Let him explain to people. Let him show the evidence of it. If thousands of people were demonstrating and he saw it on television, then there must be some tape of it somewhere. If it shows up, it will corroborate him. If it doesn’t show up, it’s going to make him look really bad.”

CNN noted that, according to the news media and top officials in New York City, Trump is wrong. The fact-checking organization Politifact called the billionaire’s story “pants on fire,” while The Washington Post suggested it was a lie by giving it “four Pinocchios.”
