Gingrich: Trump Would Win If News Coverage Was Fair

Donald Trump’s poll numbers are slipping because the news media are biased in favor of Hillary Clinton, according to Newt Gingrich.

The former Republican congressman from Georgia, who was the speaker of the House of Representatives during Bill Clinton’s administration in the 1990s, is a longtime critic of the ex-president’s wife. Politico reported that on Sunday, he claimed Trump would be far ahead of his opponent if reporters treated the two candidates equally.

“I think that without the unending one-sided assault of the news media, Trump would be beating Hillary by 15 points,” Gingrich declared on ABC’s “This Week.” He called it “amazing that Trump is as close as he is right now.”

The 73-year-old former lawmaker added: “The news media’s one-sidedness is the worst I’ve seen in my lifetime, and I’m old enough that’s a fairly long statement.” He urged voters to monitor polling places to detect signs of election fraud, even though fact-checking organizations have found no evidence that fraud is a significant problem.

Gingrich had no direct response when he was asked about the Clinton campaign’s claim that the Russian government and WikiLeaks are trying to affect the outcome of the election. The FBI has accused the Russians of hacking the emails of U.S. government officials. Clinton’s campaign manager also was recently hacked, and WikiLeaks has been making the information public.
