Gingrich Says Running for President Again ‘Too Big a Mountain’

Newt Gingrich said Tuesday that he is not running for president because he would have a hard time competing with the Republican Party’s “first-rate” candidates, The New York Times reported.

A White House bid would be “too big a mountain,” he told First Draft during an interview. “You have to be honest about what you’re capable of doing.”

The 72-year-old ex-congressman has signed on as a public policy adviser for the Denton law firm, which operates internationally, according to The Times.

Asked to comment on the GOP field of presidential candidates, Gingrich called former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush “a great innovator” and said Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is “one of the smartest politicians” he knows.

Gingrich complimented Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s debating skills. “I’m not a very good debater; Ted would beat me in a standard debate easily,” he said.

The former speaker suggested that Hillary Clinton would be even worse than President Obama. “I think in the end, while Obama is a radical, and I obviously think he is very dangerous on foreign policy because he is so incompetent, he is not venal and he doesn’t corrupt the entire system,” he said. “Having the Clintons back in the White House would be like having a very bad mayor running a very corrupt city.”
