Gingrich Refuses To Back Romney - Supports Carson For Trump’s Cabinet

While Newt Gingrich supports Donald Trump’s decision to nominate Ben Carson for secretary of the Housing and Urban Development Department, the former House speaker continues to oppose Mitt Romney as secretary of state.

Newsmax reported that on Monday, Gingrich called Carson a “tremendous” selection, even though the retired pediatric brain surgeon has no experience in housing and urban issues. “Carson is a remarkably smart guy (who) has dedicated his entire life to helping other people,” Gingrich told Fox News. He said Trump “really wanted Ben in the Cabinet.” After Carson ended his own bid for the Republican presidential nomination, he endorsed the real-estate mogul and served as a campaign surrogate.

Gingrich, one of Trump’s closest advisers, repeated his argument that someone other than the GOP’s 2012 presidential nominee should head the State Department. “I haven’t mellowed on Mitt Romney at all,” the Georgia Republican said. “If I’m asked, my advice would be don’t pick him.” Gingrich praised the president-elect for his “calm, steady, disciplined approach” to choosing a secretary of state, claiming “he’s been very methodical.”

The former speaker pledged to support whomever Trump nominates. “If he decides after several long meetings with Romney, if he decides that Romney will be his secretary of state and not go off freelancing, then I want to take the president-elect’s judgment,” Gingrich said. “I think if he were certain in his gut who the right secretary of state is, they would announce it this morning. He’s clearly not certain.”
