Gingrich: Mayors Pandering To Black People When They Remove Confederate Statues

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich, a paid political analyst for Fox News, appeared on the television network Monday to respond to Saturday’s violence in Charlottesville, Va. According to CNN, a 32-year-old woman was killed and 19 other people suffered injuries when a purported neo-Nazi allegedly slammed his car into a crowd of anti-fascist protesters. The event was a rally of “alt-right” groups opposed to a decision by local authorities to remove a statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee from a city park. A pair of Virginia State Patrol officers working the scene died when their helicopter crashed. Brawls between the right-wing activists and counter-protesters resulted in more than a dozen injuries.

Newt Gingrich agrees with white nationalists that statues honoring Confederate leaders should remain standing in the South.

Gingrich claimed that taking away symbols of the South’s secession from the union in the 1860s is “destructive.” He noted that former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also spoke out against removing the flags and statues in an attempt to correct the historical record. “I think the point is we ought to be a country focusing on the future, not a country frothing at the mouth about the past,” Gingrich told Fox News host Martha MacCallum, according to Media Matters.

He continued: “It tells you something about the intellectual collapse of the left; that all they have is this kind of rabid behavior. And, of course, mayors in towns that are largely black are going to pander to their audience. They are going to go out and prove they are popular by doing something that meets the current demagogic needs. … (It is) everything that the founding fathers worried about. Having demagoguery define your country is truly dangerous.”

As the news network showed a crowd of people protesting Confederate symbols, Gingrich declared: “Listen to the mob you got on the screen back there. That’s not democracy. That’s not a free society. That’s a group of people behaving like a mob.”

A number of monuments celebrating the Confederacy have been coming down. Last year, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (now the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations) ordered the removal of a Confederate flag from the state Capitol grounds. In Lexington, KY., Mayor Jim Gray wants to relocate two monuments at the county’s famous courthouse that honor Confederate troops. He argued that moving the statues, rather than destroying them, could satisfy those on both sides of the issue enough to head off violent clashes.

“We’ve been examining the question for almost two years,” Gray told HuffPost. “Some would say that’s way too long. I would say that change is better accepted when it’s understood. It’s not unexpected that you’d have pushback and challenge and different points of view on this. We’ve given it time for understanding, and therefore, there’s a better chance for acceptance of the path forward.”

Gingrich was the speaker of the House of Representatives in the 1990s, during former President Bill Clinton’s administration. Since early in last year’s presidential race, he has been an adviser and supporter of Donald Trump. He frequently appears on Fox News to defend the president.
