Gingrich Has A Suggestion For How President-Elect Can Wield Pardon Power

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has been a long-trusted adviser of President-elect Donald Trump, and he hasn’t been shy about offering up his opinions on how the incoming administration should be structured. As The Hill reports, his latest piece of advice centers on how Trump can get some of his appointments to clear any potential hurdles.

Gingrich was a guest on “The Diane Rehm Show,” and the topic quickly turned to how the administration will be organized. There’s been plenty of talk about potential conflicts of interest for some of Trump’s appointments, as well as a potential role for Ivanka Trump, and her husband, Jared Kushner.

“It is a totally open power, and he could simply say, 'Look, I want them to be my advisers. I pardon them if anyone finds them to have behaved against the rules. Period.' Technically, under the Constitution, he has that level of authority,” Gingrich said.

The former speaker was also careful to acknowledge that Trump needs to tread lightly when it comes to attempting to brush his current business interests aside.

“It’s a very real problem. I don’t think this is something minor. I think certainly in an age that people are convinced that government corruption is widespread both in the U.S. and around the world, you can’t just shrug and walk off from it,” he continued.
