Gingrich Claims ‘Political Pressure’ Affected Clinton Email Probe

Powerful forces influenced the FBI director’s decision to clear Hillary Clinton of wrongdoing for her email practices as secretary of state, Newt Gingrich suggested Sunday.

According to The Daily Mail, the former House speaker tweeted that Director James Comey “must be under enormous political pressure to cave like this and announce something he can’t possibly know.”

Gingrich, an adviser and surrogate for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, was reacting to Comey’s announcement earlier in the day that the FBI had found no incriminating emails on computer devices that long-time Clinton aide Huma Abedin used. The director sent a letter to Congress members, revealing that agents labored “around the clock to process and review a large number of emails” in an effort to complete the process before Election Day.

Comey said the bureau would not pursue criminal charges, the same determination he made in July following an examination of the private email server Clinton used while heading the State Department. Despite accusing her of having been “extremely careless,” the director said there is no evidence that Clinton had the “intent” to leak classified government information.

Gingrich, during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” told host Chuck Todd that the country is “in for a long, difficult couple of years, maybe a decade or more.” He continued: “Unlike in Bosnia, Northern Ireland or Rwanda, competition for power in the U.S. remains largely a debate between people who can work together once the election is over.”
