Gen. McCaffrey: Trump's Remark To Fallen Soldier's Widow 'Makes Me Sick'

President Trump’s phone call last week to the widow of a soldier killed in action was “absolutely disastrous,” according to a retired four-star Army general.

“It really makes me sick, to be honest,” Gen. Barry McCaffrey told The Washington Post. “He wings stuff. He doesn’t have any empathy. … We’re cruising toward a war with North Korea, and for eight days we’ve watched inane behavior by the president.” According to The Hill, the general was reacting to reports that when Trump called Myeshia Johnson, he told her that her husband “knew what he signed up for.” Sgt. La David Johnson was one of the four U.S. troops who died Oct. 4 in Niger.

Democratic Rep. Frederica Wilson said she overheard the president’s comment while riding in a vehicle with Johnson, who was traveling to retrieve the soldier’s remains. Trump denied the Florida congresswoman’s account, tweeting: “I had a very respectful conversation with the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, and spoke his name from beginning, without hesitation.”

However, Johnson confirmed that the lawmaker was telling the truth. “Whatever Ms. Wilson said was not fabricated, what she said was 100 percent correct,” the grieving woman said on “Good Morning America.” She continued: “Why would we fabricate something like that? He made me cry because I was very angry at the tone of his voice and how he said it.”

Recalling the phone conversation, Johnson told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos: “I heard him stumbling on trying to remember my husband’s name. And that’s what hurt me the most, because if my husband is out here fighting for our country, and he risked his life for our country, why can’t you remember his name? And that’s what made me upset and cry even more, because my husband was an awesome soldier.”

The widow, who is pregnant, said she was still waiting to see the sergeant’s body and find out what exactly what happened. “I need to see him so I will know that that is my husband,” she explained. “They won’t show me a finger, a hand. I know my husband’s body from head to toe, and they won’t let me see anything.” Referring to the flag-draped coffin holding the fallen soldier, Johnson told Stephanopoulos: “I don’t know what’s in that box. It could be empty, for all I know. I need to see my husband.”

She demanded “to know why it took them 48 hours to find my husband,” adding: “I don’t know how he got killed, where he got killed or anything. I don’t know that part. They never told me, and that’s what I’ve been trying to find out since Day One.”

The president is under fire for failing to call many of the families of soldiers who have died since he took office. When Trump claimed he had contacted relatives of all the fallen troops, some of the family members came forward to refute him. According to multiple news outlets, the president lied again when he said past presidents did not always call the families. Trump also has been absent from ceremonies for fallen troops when their bodies are returned to the United States.
